      ALEXANDER GRIBOEDOV

Alexander Griboedov’s body was brought from Teheran, were he had been Russian ambassador, and buried in Tbilisi on Mtatsminda Mountain as he had requested – to him the mountain was “Tbilisi’s most poetic possession”. The lower terrace holds a stone grotto in which a bronze woman embraces a cross in unrestrained grief.

“Your intellect and your deeds are immortal in the Russian memory, but why has my love outlived you?” – these tragic words engraved on the monument belong to his 16-year-old widow, Nino, daughter of the poet Alexander Chavchavadze. She was later buried here too.
